Gobbler Gears

Need a bike? Gobbler Gears gives students a convenient, full-service cycling experience at an affordable price. Our bicycles are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis in one-semester or two-semester (Fall-Spring, Spring-Summer, or Summer-Fall) periods. Hit the road in a Gobbler Gears bicycle today!

Gobbler Gears Fall 2024 reservations are now available! Please read below for steps on how to reserve your bicycle.

How it Works

  • Students can request a Gobbler Gears bicycle during sales periods through the online rental application. The application does not guarantee you a bicycle, and bicycles are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If a bicycle is available in your size, you will be notified by Sustainable Transportation. You will be charged a rental fee to your University account and receive a link to the Heads Up Hokies course. The fee must be paid and course completed before picking up your bicycle.
  • After paying your rental fee and completing the Heads Up Hokies course, participants will schedule a time to pick up their bicycle, keyed U-lock, and free bike helmet.
  • Monthly safety checks, performed at the Hokie Bike Hub, are required during the rental period.
  • Bicycles must be returned by the last day of classes for the given semester.

Our Bicycles

Gobbler Gears bicycles are high-quality, 7- or 8-speed hybrid models that are outfitted with front and rear lights. The bicycles are available in multiple sizes and are assigned to participants by inseam measurement and height to provide a properly-fitted bicycle. All Gobbler Gears bicycles are issued with a keyed U-lock.

Helmets

Free helmets are provided with all rentals, courtesy of the Gregory Weiner Foundation. The helmets are five-star-rated by the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab. The helmet is yours to keep after your rental period ends.

Free Repairs

Participants will receive free repairs from Hokie Bike Hub staff. Repairs are conducted on an appointment basis, Monday-Friday from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Email gettingaround@vt.edu to schedule your repair appointment.

How to Receive Your Bicycle

Gobbler Gears participants will be contacted via email before the beginning of their rental semester with information on the pick-up process. Gobbler Gears bikes are distributed and collected at the Hokie Bike Hub on level 1 of the Perry Street Parking Garage.
